Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

A certificate rating a home's energy efficiency from A to G, required before a home is marketed for sale or let in England and Wales and valid for 10 years.

Also known as: EPC · energy rating

An EPC is produced by an accredited domestic energy assessor after a short visit. It shows the current and potential rating and recommends improvements. You can check whether a valid certificate already exists on the government register.

There is no minimum rating to sell a home, but rented homes in England and Wales generally need an E or above. In Scotland the EPC forms part of the Home Report.
